Genuine Leather vs Rexine: How to Tell the Difference
Share
Genuine leather is made from animal hide and shows natural grain, absorbs water slowly, and develops a soft patina over years, while rexine is a fabric base coated with polyurethane or PVC that feels uniform, smells of plastic, and cracks within a few years. You can usually tell them apart in under a minute using four quick checks: touch, smell, the water drop test, and looking at the cut edges. This guide explains both materials, the tests, and what each means for lifespan and comfort.
What is genuine leather?
Genuine leather is hide from cattle, buffalo, goat or sheep that has been tanned to stop it decaying. In Pakistan, most shoe leather comes from cow or buffalo hide, with goat skin used for softer, lighter shoes.
Leather is not one material but several layers and grades:
- Full grain leather is the top layer of the hide with the surface left intact. It has visible pores, natural marks and grain variation. It is the strongest and most expensive grade.
- Top grain leather is the top layer with the surface lightly sanded to remove marks. Softer than full grain but slightly weaker.
- Genuine leather as a grade means the lower layers of the hide, split off the top. It is real hide but weaker and often coated with a printed pattern.
- Bonded leather is scraps of hide ground up and glued together with a polyurethane binder. It is the lowest grade and behaves closer to rexine over time.
A shoe labelled "genuine leather" in a Pakistani bazaar could be any of these grades. The tests in the next section help you judge what you actually have in your hands.
What is rexine?
Rexine is the common South Asian name for a coated fabric. It is usually a cotton or polyester base fabric with a layer of polyurethane (PU) or polyvinyl chloride (PVC) on top, embossed with a pattern that imitates leather grain.
Rexine became popular because it is cheap to make, water resistant on the surface, and easy to wipe clean. In Pakistan it is widely used on formal shoes, sandals, bags and upholstery at the lower end of the price range.
The weakness of rexine is the coating itself. PU and PVC layers slowly lose their plasticiser, especially in heat, and the surface then cracks and peels. Once that starts, the material cannot be repaired. The fabric base also does not let water vapour escape the way hide does, so feet sweat more.
Rexine is one type of synthetic material. Others you will see on shoe labels include PU leather (sometimes called vegan leather) and PVC leather. For a shopper, they behave similarly: uniform surface, plastic smell, and a lifespan measured in seasons rather than years.
Four quick tests you can do in under a minute
These tests work in a shop or when your online order arrives. No tools needed.
1. Touch and press
Press a fingertip into the surface. Real leather creases and wrinkles near your finger, then springs back slowly. Rexine stays stiff or forms a sharp dent that does not relax. Run your hand over the surface. Leather feels slightly uneven and warms in your hand. Rexine feels smooth, cool and uniform.
2. Smell
Leather smells of hide and tanning agents, a rich, natural smell. Rexine smells faintly of plastic or chemicals. This is one of the most reliable tests. A strong chemical smell is a clear sign of a synthetic coating.
3. Water drop test
Place a single drop of water on the surface. On genuine leather, the drop sits for a few seconds, then slowly darkens the spot as it is absorbed. On rexine, the drop sits on top indefinitely and wipes away leaving no mark. Test on a hidden area, such as inside the heel or under the tongue.
4. Look at edges, pores and grain
Examine the cut edge where the sole meets the upper, or inside the shoe. Leather edges look fibrous and rough, like dense felt. Rexine edges show fabric layers with a smooth coating on top. On the surface, leather grain has irregular pores and natural marks. Rexine grain repeats the same stamped pattern with no pores.
Genuine leather vs rexine: side by side
| Feature | Genuine leather | Rexine |
|---|---|---|
| Material | Animal hide, tanned | Fabric base with PU or PVC coating |
| Surface | Irregular grain, visible pores | Uniform stamped pattern, no pores |
| Smell | Natural hide smell | Plastic or chemical smell |
| Water drop | Slowly absorbed, spot darkens | Sits on top, wipes off |
| Breathability | Lets water vapour out | Traps moisture, feet sweat more |
| Break in period | Needs 1 to 2 weeks to soften | Soft from day one, then stiffens |
| Lifespan with normal use | 3 to 10 years | 1 to 3 years before cracking |
| Repair | Can be polished, conditioned, resoled | Cannot be repaired once it cracks |
| Water resistance | Needs care, can stain | Surface resists water, seams still leak |
| Typical price in Pakistan | Higher | Lower |
Lifespan: what each material does over time
A well cared for pair of leather shoes lasts 3 to 10 years of regular use. The upper softens and moulds to the foot, the sole can be replaced by a cobbler, and scuffs can be polished out. Leather needs maintenance: conditioning every few months, drying away from direct heat, and storage with shoe trees or stuffed paper.
Rexine shoes typically last 1 to 3 years. The failure point is the coating. In Pakistani summers, when shoes are left in hot cars or near windows, the plastic layer loses flexibility and cracks at the flex points, usually across the toe box within the first year of heavy use. Once cracked, the peeling spreads and the shoe is finished.
Heat and humidity, both common across Pakistan, shorten rexine life the most. Leather also suffers in monsoon humidity but can be dried and conditioned back. Rexine cannot.
Comfort: how each material feels on the foot
Leather breathes. Hide passes water vapour through its structure, so sweat escapes instead of pooling inside the shoe. This matters in Pakistani heat, where a non-breathing upper means damp socks, odour and skin irritation by mid-afternoon.
Leather also stretches and moulds. After one to two weeks of wear, a leather upper takes the shape of your foot, which reduces pressure points. The trade off is the break in period, when new leather shoes can feel stiff and rub.
Rexine is comfortable on day one because it is already soft. But it does not mould to the foot, does not breathe, and in heat can feel noticeably hotter. If you stand or walk for long hours, the lack of breathability is the biggest comfort gap between the two materials.
If you have wide feet or need extra room, sizing matters as much as material. Check the Mova shoe size guide before ordering, since leather will stretch slightly with wear while rexine stays the same shape.
Price and value for money
Rexine wins on upfront price. A rexine formal shoe often costs a fraction of a comparable leather pair. For shoes you wear occasionally, such as a pair for weddings or Eid, rexine can be a sensible choice because the coating ages mostly from time and heat, not just wear.
Leather wins on cost per year. If a leather pair lasts five years and a rexine pair lasts two, and the leather pair costs two and a half times as much, the yearly cost is the same, and you get better comfort throughout. For daily wear, office shoes and anything you walk long distances in, leather is the better value.
A middle path many Pakistani shoppers take is leather for daily and formal shoes, and synthetic for monsoon use, bathroom slippers and rough outdoor use where leather would be damaged anyway. You can compare options across both materials in the full Mova range of shoes for men.
Common tricks used on labels and in shops
Be aware of these when shopping:
- "Genuine leather" printed on the box is not a guarantee. Check the shoe itself with the touch and smell tests.
- Leather look, leather finish, leatherite, synthetic leather all mean rexine or another synthetic. None of these are hide.
- Leather lining only. Some shoes use leather inside and rexine outside, or the reverse. Check both surfaces separately.
- The sole is never the test. Soles are rubber, PU or TPR on both leather and rexine shoes. Judge the upper only.
- A strong leather smell spray is sometimes applied to synthetic shoes. If the smell seems too strong and chemical at the same time, rely on the touch and edge tests instead.
Care tips to extend the life of each material
For leather shoes:
- Wipe with a dry cloth after wear and let them air dry for a few hours.
- Apply leather conditioner or a light polish every 2 to 3 months.
- Never dry near a heater or in direct sunlight, as heat cracks hide.
- Use shoe trees or stuff newspaper to hold the shape in storage.
- Keep away from monsoon damp, and dry fully before storing for the season.
For rexine shoes:
- Wipe with a slightly damp cloth. Avoid alcohol based cleaners, which strip the coating.
- Keep away from heat, including car boots in summer.
- Do not use leather polish or conditioner, it does nothing for PU.
- Store in a cool, dry place, as unused rexine still cracks with age.

Frequently asked questions
Is rexine the same as leather?
No. Rexine is a fabric base coated with polyurethane or PVC to imitate the look of leather. It contains no animal hide. Real leather is tanned hide, while rexine is one of several synthetic materials sold as leather look or leatherite.
How can I check if my shoes are real leather at home?
Do the water drop test on a hidden spot. If the drop is slowly absorbed and the spot darkens, it is likely leather. If the drop sits on top and wipes off, it is synthetic. Also smell the shoe, leather has a natural hide smell while rexine smells of plastic, and check the cut edge, leather looks fibrous while rexine shows fabric layers.
Do rexine shoes last long?
Rexine shoes usually last 1 to 3 years. The coating cracks at flex points and once that happens the shoe cannot be repaired. Heat speeds this up, so rexine shoes left in hot cars or stored in warm places age faster. Occasional wear, such as for events only, extends their useful life.
Are leather shoes worth the higher price in Pakistan?
For daily wear, yes. Leather breathes better in hot weather, moulds to the foot after a break in period, and can be resoled and polished for years. Spread over five or more years of use, the cost per year is often similar to replacing rexine shoes every couple of seasons. For occasional wear, rexine remains a reasonable budget choice.
Which material is better for the Pakistani summer?
Leather, because it passes water vapour and keeps feet cooler and drier. Rexine traps moisture, which leads to sweating, odour and damp socks on long days. For monsoon months, some shoppers prefer synthetic shoes that can get wet without staining, then switch back to leather in dry weather.
Does genuine leather crack like rexine?
Leather can dry out and crack if it is never conditioned, but this is preventable with basic care. Rexine cracking is not preventable because it comes from the plastic coating losing flexibility over time. Conditioned leather stays supple for years, while no product can stop rexine from eventually peeling.
